Make a stacked bar chart online

A stacked bar puts each series on top of the last one. The full height is the total, and the colors are the parts. Paste a label column plus at least two number columns. This page opens the homepage paste box with stacking turned on, and the chart draws before you sign up.

Two series on the same months. Stacked, each bar is signups plus churned, not a side-by-side pair.

From columns to a stack

  1. Paste the header. The first cell names the categories. Each later cell names a series, such as New and Returning.
  2. Use at least two number columns. One column has nothing to stack. Chartsuno leaves a single series as an ordinary bar.
  3. Read the preview. The homepage opens with stacked bars selected. Totals are the bar heights. You can still see the chart with no account.
  4. Save when the stack is right. A free account stores up to 10 charts a month and lets you export a PNG or copy a share link.

What stacking is good at

Stack when the parts belong to the same total: revenue by product inside each month, or tickets by channel inside each week. If people need to compare the parts to each other more than to the total, leave the bars side by side. Stacking hides that comparison, because only the bottom series shares a baseline.

Feb,160,350
Mar,210,480
Is it free?
You can paste data and preview a chart without an account and without paying. A free account saves up to 10 charts a month, and those saved charts can be exported as a PNG or CSV and shared with a link. Paid plans remove that monthly cap. There is no credit card for the free plan.
Do I need to sign up?
Not to paste data and see the chart. Saving to My Charts, downloading a PNG or CSV, and copying a share link need a free account. On the web, Continue with Google creates the account. The iOS app also offers Sign in with Apple.
Can I stack a single column?
No. Stacking needs two or more number columns. A table with one number column stays a normal bar chart.
Will the bars be horizontal?
The preview uses vertical stacked bars. After you save, the chart editor can switch a bar chart to horizontal bars when the category names are long.
How many series should I stack?
Two or three stay readable. Past five, the middle colors are hard to compare because they do not start at zero. Consider a separate bar for each series instead.
